Luther W. Cantrell

87 year old Luther W. Cantrell of Smithville died Tuesday morning at DeKalb Community Hospital of an extended illness. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, a member of the VFW and International Union Operators of Engineers Local 197, and he was retired from TVA and a retired night watchman for the City of Smithville. The funeral will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Michael Hale will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.; Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.; and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathan and Emma Sullens Cantrell; brothers, James Nathan “Goodle” Cantrell, Bethel Magness “Doc” Cantrell, and John Clifford “Sy” Cantrell; and sisters, Rachel and Thelma Cantrell. Survivors include his wife, Helen Fay Cantrell of Smithville; 2 sons, Wesley Cantrell of Murfreesboro; Bradley Cantrell of Miami, Florida; 1 grandson, Chad Cantrell and 1 great grandson. Two sisters-in-law, Freda and Frances Cantrell of Smithville. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. The family asks that donations be made to either Justin Potter Library or to the DeKalb County Relay for Life in memory of Mr. Cantrell, in lieu of flowers.
