68 year old Shirley Mabe of Alexandria died Friday night at her residence. She was the wife of William Mabe. The body is at Avant Funeral Home in Alexandria where arrangements are incomplete.

Thurston Millard Cantrell

60 year old Thurston Millard Cantrell of Sparta died Thursday at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was a DeKalb County native. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the East Sparta Church of God. Jerry Barnwell will officiate and burial will be in the Oaklawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 6:00 p.m. Saturday at the church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis Cantrell and Ola Rigsby Cantrell. Survivors include his wife, Linda Faye Lowery Cantrell of Sparta. A daughter and son-in-law, Christie and Billy Hammons of Rickman. A granddaughter, Hannah Hammons of Rickman. Joe Thomas Harvey

89 year old Joe Thomas Harvey of Alexandria died Friday at UMC Hospital. He was a Wilson County native and a farmer. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church where he was a member for 77 years and an Elder for 50 years. Tim Diffenderfer will officiate and burial will be in the Talley Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Jefferson and Maude Gatton Harvey; a brother, Gilbert Harvey; an infant sister; and son-in-law, Eddie M. Crips. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Alene Adamson Harvey. Children, Mary Katherine and her husband Richard Matus, Margaret Doris and her husband Donnie Uselton, and Charlotte Elaine and her husband Ken Chapman all of Lebanon, James Tommy and his wife Miranda Harvey of Alexandria, and Brenda Gail Crips of Smithville. 81 year old Paul E. Howard of Alexandria and formerly of Pocola, Oklahoma died Wednesday at his residence. He was a retired contractor and horseman. The funeral will be Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Hunter Funeral Home in Watertown. Don Mathis will officiate and burial will be in the Hillview Cemetery in Alexandria. Visitation will be Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Len Howard and Mary Bolt Howard. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Phyllis Stafford Howard of Alexandria. A son and daughter-in-law, Brandon and Debbie Howard of Watertown. Three daughters, Mary Frances and her husband Jim Evans of Lebanon, Sandy and her husband Henry Crawford of Jacksonville, Florida, and Ladonna McClendon of Orlando, Florida. 79 year old Billy Joe Corley of Lower Helton Road, Alexandria died Wednesday from injuries he suffered in a three wheeler accident. The funeral will be Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Mount Zion Baptist Church. Dan Mallette and Richard Buckner will officiate and burial will be in the Mount Zion Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Avant Funeral Home in Alexandria on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Corley is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ruth Hancock Corley. Four children, William Randall and his wife Angie Corley of Chapel Hill; James Quinn Corley of Smyrna; Tony Joe Corley of Liberty; and Kimberly and her husband William Turner of Smithville. 65 year old Edwin Ray “Buddy” Dunham died Sunday at the Cookeville Regional Hospital. He was born in DeKalb County. Dunham was also a member of the Hickory Valley Methodist Presbyterian Church. The funeral will be Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Thurman Funeral Home in Sparta. Freddie Copeland and Floyd Massey will officiate and burial will be in the Frasier Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Tuesday and until 9:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Chapel of Thurman Funeral Home. In addition to his parents, Othel Floyd Dunham, Sr. and Lillie Pauline Washer Dunham, he was preceded in death by a brother, Oswald Dunham. 82 year old John Henry Puckett of Watertown died Sunday morning at Summit Medical Center in Hermitage. He was born in DeKalb County, a retired employee after serving 29 years at the Ford Glass Plant, a Baptist, and a U.S. Army Veteran. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Hunter Funeral Home in Watertown. Jack Stone will officiate and burial will be in Poplar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.; Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.; and Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Louvella Frazier Puckett. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Martha Key Puckett. 78 year old Martha Elizabeth Young of Smithville died Saturday at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a Baptist and an employee at the shirt factory and Genesco. The funeral will be Monday at 1:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Donald Owens and Dave Cardin will officiate and burial will be in Whorton Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Novie Yates Taylor; her first husband, Willie Hobart Owens; her second husband, W.P. “Bill” Young; a step-child, Shelia Scarsella; a sister, Carnell Keith; and a brother, Albert Taylor. Survivors include her children, Charles and his wife Beatrice Owens and Sue Martin all of Smithville. A step-son, Bruce and his wife Dawn Young of Michigan. 82 year old Lucille Jones of McMinnville died Saturday at her home of a short illness. She was a retired employee of River Park Hospital and was preceded in death by her husband, Major A. Jones; a son, Bennie R. Jones; her parents, George and Cuba Lou Smithson Williamson; her step-mother, Myrtle Gaither Williamson and a sister, Louise Mayo. The funeral will be Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of McMinnville Funeral Home. Mark Carrigan and Willard Ralph, Jr. will officiate and burial will be in the Mount View Cemetery. The Jones family will receive friends on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at McMinnville Funeral Home. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby Wayne and Betty Jones of Smithville, Carl and Opal Jones of Woodbury, and Buddy and Phyllis Jones of McMinnville. A daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn (Ann) and Herman (Ace) Boren of McMinnville. Eleven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren survive. 62 year old Galen Bruce Roll of Dowelltown died Wednesday at University Medical Center in Lebanon. He was a Methodist and a computer programmer. A memorial service will be held at a later date. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion E. and Jacqueline Morrison Roll and a half brother, Earl C. Smith. Survivors include sisters, Barbara Powell of Dowelltown and Karen Elling of Texas. Brothers, Ernest Roll of Louisiana and Allan Roll of Virginia. Nieces, Holly Frazier of Liberty and Nancy Craig of Texas. Nephews, Erin and Shelly Gibson of Dowelltown and Dale and Melanie Craig of Virginia. Seven great nieces and nephews also survive. Mr. Roll’s remains have been cremated.
