DeKalb Students Go Back to School Monday

DeKalb County students will return to the classrooms on Monday, January 4th to begin the third nine week session.
Schools will be closed for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 18th and for President’s Day, Monday, February 15th.
Schools will be closed for spring break March 29th to April 2nd
Students will not attend on Friday, May 21. That will be an administrative day and all teachers must attend.. The last day of school will be Saturday, May 22nd. That will be an abbreviated school day and report cards will be sent home.
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday, March 11 at DeKalb County High School from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
Parent-Teacher Conferences will also be held from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 28th at DeKalb Middle School, Northside Elementary, Smithville Elementary, and DeKalb West School.
Report cards will be sent home on Thursday, January 7th and Tuesday, March 9th.
Competency testing at DCHS will be February 9-11.
Gateway testing at DCHS will be May 4-6. Gateway test makeup will be May 7th.
Writing Assessment for the 5th, 8th, and 11th grades will be February 2nd. Writing Assessment make-up will be February 3rd.
TCAP testing of elementary students will be April 15th-22nd
(Stockpile Days) Professional Development/Instructional Days will be held from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 5th

Jewel “Red” Mabe

83 year old Jewel “Red” Mabe of Smithville died Friday at DeKalb Community Hospital. He was a member of the Smithville First Baptist Church for over 50 years. Mabe was also a World War II U.S. Army Veteran, A Shriner, member of Masonic Lodge #77, and the Eastern Star. He was retired from the Carrier Corporation. The funeral will be Monday at 1:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Bill Palmitter will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. Mabe was preceded in death by his parents, Aaron and Lola Pollard Mabe; his wife, Guynell Mabe; a step-daughter, Carol Looney; two sisters, Hazel Pauline Billings and Roena Mabe; and two brothers, Jerry Wayne Mabe and Harold Louis Mabe. Survivors include one son, Eddie Mabe of Smithville. A step-daughter, Glenda and husband Danny Staley of Smithville. Four step-grandchildren, Tina Rowland, Lee Ann Williams, Don and Jimmy Crips. Six step great grandchildren, Zachery Rowland, Hunter and Caled Williams, Britany, Chloe, and Stormie Crips. Two sisters, Louise and husband Seborn Cantrell of Smithville and Linda and husband Gene Jones of Sparta. Two brothers, Carlon and wife Jeanette Mabe of Smithville, Dexter and wife Marie Mabe of McMinnville and several nieces and nephews. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Michael Andrew Elliott

19 year old Michael Andrew Elliott of Smithville died Friday. He was a member of the Smithville First United Methodist Church and an employee at Gordon’s Hardware. The funeral will be Tuesday at noon at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Mark Pafford and John Purdue will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service at noon. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Murray and Frances Rhinehart and James Parham. Survivors include his parents, Susan and Gordon Parham of Smithville and Mark and Michelle Elliott of Murfreesboro. Three brothers, Stephen Elliott of Knoxville, Alex Elliott of Murfreesboro, and Matthew and wife Wendy Parham of Crossville. Three sisters, Bri and husband Nick Cole and Alyssa Koch all of Murfreesboro, Kimberly and husband Woody Cox of Hurst, Texas. Paternal grandparents, Glenn and Janette Elliott of Portland and Donald and Beverly Venske of Smithville. Maternal grandmother, Margie Parham of Cookeville. Melvin Hoyt Poss

71 year old Melvin Hoyt Poss of McMinnville died Thursday at River Park Hospital in McMinnville. He was born in DeKalb County, owner of Melvin Poss Construction Company, and a member of the Newtown The Baptist Church. The funeral will be Sunday at noon at McMinnville Funeral Home Chapel. Elder Greg Hibdon and Elder Virgil Hibdon, Jr. will officiate and burial will follow at Mount View Cemetery in DeKalb County. The Poss family will receive friends Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. until noon at McMinnville Funeral Home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hershel and Carmean Cantrell Poss; his son, David Poss; and three infant siblings. Survivors include his wife, Jimmye Poss of McMinnville. A son, Allen Poss of McMinnville. Three daughters, Brenda and husband Rickey Patrick, Kimberly and husband George Hunt all of McMinnville, and Bridget Poss of Murfreesboro. Sisters, Opal and husband Lewis Land, Elizabeth and husband Nathan Reagan, Janey and husband Lewis Young, and Donna Hale all of McMinnville. Brothers, Reed Poss and Harold and wife Diane Poss all of McMinnville. Grandchildren, Jason and LeAnn Patrick, Elisha, Sophia, and Cecilia Hunt. Kevin Eugene Sanders

35 year old Kevin Eugene Sanders of Smithville was pronounced dead on arrival Thursday night at DeKalb Community Hospital. He attended the People’s Pentecostal Church. Sanders was also a tree trimmer. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Robert Presley will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until the service at 2:00 p.m. He is survived by his parents, Chester and Pat Sanders of Smithville. Children, Megan Lynn, Kevin Lee, and Angel Faith Sanders all of Smithville. A brother, Jeff Sanders of Smithville. Sisters, Tammy Nokes, and Sandy Wheeler, and Vanessa Freeman all of Smithville. His maternal grandmother, Lillian Neal Winchester of Smithville and his paternal grandmother, Lavada Sauls of Smithville. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
