88 year old Jewel T. Jones of Battle Creek, Michigan died Sunday at her home. She was born in Smithville, the daughter of James E. and Calli L. (Bain) Adcock. She was a homemaker most of her life but was previously employed by Keyes-Davis for 17 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emerson Jones. She is survived by her children, Bettie “Lene” Frantz of East Leroy, Ann and husband Ray Garrett of Battle Creek, and Bill and wife Geneva Jones of Battle Creek. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren; 11 great grand children; sisters Betty Jean Jones, Virginia Daniels, and Mildred and her husband Kenneth Johnson; along with a brother Clayton and his wife Dorothy Adcock all of Smithville. In addition to her husband, Jones was preceded in death by 7 brothers and sisters. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Royal Funeral Home in Battle Creek. Michigan. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Royal Funeral Home in Battle Creek. Memorial contributions may be given to the Good Samaritan Hospice Care.

Richard Lee Sackett
59 year old Richard Lee Sackett of Smithville died Saturday at his residence. His body has been cremated and no service will be held. He was preceded in death by his father, George Sackett. Survivors include his mother, Dorothy Sackett; a daughter, Tammy and her husband Jimmy Williams of Carthage; a brother, Carl Sackett; and a sister, Patricia Arthur. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Donations may be made, in lieu of flowers, to DeKalb Funeral Chapel to help with final expenses.
Candidates May Now Qualify for Smithville Municipal Election
Candidates interested in running for Aldermen in the Smithville Municipal Election this summer may now pick up qualifying petitions at the DeKalb County Election Commission Office in the courthouse.
Lisa Peterson, Administrator of Elections, says candidates have until Thursday, March 19th to qualify. The deadline to register to vote in time for the election is May 18th.
Three Aldermen will be elected on Tuesday, June 16th. The positions are currently held by Jerry Hutchins, Sr., Tonya Sullivan, and Willie Thomas. Each term is for two years.
Carleton Francis Armbruster
85 year old Carleton Francis Armbruster of Watertown died Sunday at DeKalb Community Hospital. The body is at Avant Funeral Home in Alexandria where a memorial service will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends at Avant Funeral Home on Thursday from 1:00 p.m. until the service at 2:00 p.m. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara C. Armbruster of Watertown. Three sons, Robert C. and Jerry Armbruster, Sr. of Merritt Island, Florida; Roger Thomas Armbruster of Watertown and Gary and Pat Armbruster of Merritt Island, Florida. A sister, Vivian Hilt of Simsbury, Connecticut. Avant Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Gregory Dale Edwards
46 year old Gregory Dale Edwards of Smithville died Saturday at his residence. He was a painter and a member of the Haywood Hills Baptist Church in Nashville. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Jason Lohorn will officiate and burial will be in Salem Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until the service at 11:00 a.m. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Jeffery Darryl Edwards. Survivors include his parents, Charles and Shirley Edwards of Liberty. A sister, Dana and her husband Butch Davis of Dowelltown. A brother, Glenn Edwards of Nashville. A niece, Bethany Davis of Dowelltown. Several aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
DeKalb County Fair Wins “Premiere” Award
The DeKalb County Fair received a “Premiere” Award during the 87th Annual Tennessee Association of Fairs Convention held January 15th-17th in Nashville.
As state divisional award winners from last year, the DeKalb County Fair in Division “A” along with the Middle Tennessee District Fair of Lawrenceburg in Division “AA” and the Coffee County Fair in Division “AAA” were in the running for the coveted Champion of Champions Fair award for 2008.
This year’s Champion of Champions award went to the Middle Tennessee District Fair while DeKalb County and Coffee County received the “Premiere” Fair Awards in their divisions.
Meanwhile the 2008 DeKalb County Fairest of the Fair, Nicole Linn, was among the top ten finalists for the Tennessee Association’s Fairest of the Fair. This year’s crown went to the Warren County Fairest of the Fair. A total of 51 contestants competed for the title.
State divisional champion awards for 2008 went to the Overton County Fair, Division “A”; the Dyer County Fair, Division “AA”; and the Putnam County Fair, Division “AAA.”
This year’s Merit Awards dinner, attended by hundreds of fair managers, vendors and volunteers from across the state, was held at the Nashville Airport Marriott Hotel on Saturday evening. Many of the state’s top county agricultural fairs were recognized for outstanding achievement during the 2008 fair season.
Woman Charged with Child Abuse
A DeKalb County woman has been charged with child abuse.
Sheriff Patrick Ray says deputies arrested 34 year old Lori Ann Keith of King’s Court Trailer Court on Wednesday. Keith allegedly assaulted her 15 year old child causing scratches and marks to the child’s arm and neck area. Keith’s bond was set at $1,000 and she will appear in court on January 22nd.
Meanwhile, on Saturday after receiving a complaint about a vehicle driving erratic, Deputies arrested 47 year old Dolores Castorena of Walker Street, McMinnville. Deputies spotted Castorena’s vehicle on Highway 146 swerving all over the road. After stopping the vehicle, officers asked Castorena to perform field sobriety tasks which he failed. Deputies also discovered that Castorena did not have insurance for his vehicle and did not possess a valid driver’s license. Castorena was arrested for no driver’s license and driving under the influence. He was also issued citations for violation of the implied consent law and no insurance. His bond was set at $2,000 and he will appear in court on January 29th.
Fire Destroys Home on Big Hurricane Road
Fire destroyed a home this morning (Monday) on Big Hurricane Road.
Lieutenant Bradley Mullinax of the DeKalb County Fire Department says the call came in around 6:00 a.m. Monday. A neighbor spotted the blaze and reported it.
Firefighters responded from the Cookeville Highway, Short Mountain Highway, Keltonburg, and Midway Stations and the Main Station, along with DeKalb EMS and the Sheriff’s Department.
Mullinax says the house was already too far gone by the time firefighters arrived and it could not be saved.
No one was home at the time of the fire and no one was injured.
Mullinax says firefighters were told that the home belonged to Darrin Ray.

Clifton Arvie “Cliff” Maynard
66 year old Clifton Arvie “Cliff” Maynard of White Bluff died Saturday at the Horizon Medical Center. A graveside service will be Monday at 1:00 p.m. at the Nosegay Cemetery. Buck Allan will officiate. He is survived by his wife, Digna Maynard of White Bluff. A son, Trevis Maynard of Liberty. Two daughters, Connie Maynard and Sandra D. Wonner both of White Bluff. Two brothers, Gearl Maynard of Nashville and Marshall Maynard of Brush Creek. Sisters, Naomie Malone of Mount Juliet, Keeble Thweatt of Smithville, Sally Jones of Liberty, Shirley Wright of Nashville, Sybil Waite of Murfreesboro, and Barbara Crague of Madison. Seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive. Taylor Funeral Home in Dickson is in charge of the arrangements. There will be no public visitation.
Berniece Marcum Jackson
86 year old Berniece Marcum Jackson of McMinnville died Friday at her residence of an extended illness. She was born in White County. Jackson was also a retired employee of the McMinnville Garment Company and a member of the Newtown The Baptist Church. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Spring Hill The Baptist Church in White County. Howard Hooper, Leslie Moore, and James Wright will officiate and burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery. The Jackson family will receive friends on Saturday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McMinnville Funeral Home and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Spring Hill The Baptist Church. Jackson was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Bessie Knowles Marcum; sisters, Katherine Marcum and Reba Tindell; and brothers, Reed and John Marcum. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Hobert E. Jackson of McMinnville. Sons, Paul D. Jackson of Orlando, Florida and Donald E. Jackson of McMinnville. A daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Calvin D. Jones of McMinnville. Brothers, Alton and Pearle Marcum, Meril and Ruby Marcum, and Earl Marcum all of White County. Four grandchildren, Jim Blankenship, Donna Overall, Jeremy Jackson, and Jennifer Jackson. Six great grandchildren, Justin,Cody, Abagail, Rachel, Alec, and Adain, and several nieces and nephews.
